FAQ's: Silicone Scar Management & Alhdyran Moisturizing Cream
⭐ Scar Management – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Whether you’re healing from surgery, burns, or injury, this FAQ helps you navigate the most effective options in scar management—including silicone-based therapies and ALHYDRAN moisturising cream.
🩹 Silicone-Based Scar Therapy
1. What is scar management and why is it important?
Scar management helps regulate the healing process to reduce raised, red, or itchy scars. Using techniques like silicone sheets or gels improves cosmetic and functional outcomes.
2. How does silicone therapy work for scars?
Silicone forms a semi-occlusive layer that hydrates the scar and regulates collagen production, reducing scar height, redness, and discomfort.

3. What’s the difference between silicone gel and silicone sheet?
-
Gel: Invisible, quick-drying, ideal for face and small scars.
-
Sheet: Reusable, durable, perfect for large or surgical scars. Provides slight compression and absorbs tension from the skin and scar.
🔗 Silicone Sheets
4. When should I start using silicone after surgery or injury?
Once the wound is fully closed and there’s no scabbing or infection—usually within 1–4 weeks post-procedure/wound cause.
📘 Scar Management Guidelines
5. How long should I continue silicone therapy for?
Use daily for at least 8–12 weeks. For older or hypertrophic scars, treatment may extend up to 6 months or more.
6. How often should I apply silicone gel?
Apply a thin layer twice daily to clean, dry skin. Allow it to dry before covering with makeup or clothes.
7. Can I wear silicone gel under makeup or clothing?
Yes. Once dry, silicone gel is invisible and can be safely covered. Some silicone products we offer also contain SPF (Bapscar SPF40, Alhydran SPF30, Silicone Sheeting UV50) , providing additional protection when outdoors.
8. Are there silicone products that contain SPF?
Yes. Bapscarcare Gel SPF40 and Pro-Sil SPF15 Stick provide effective sun protection while supporting scar treatment—especially useful for facial and neck scars or scars exposed to sunlight.

9. Why is sun protection important for healing scars?
New scars are highly sensitive to UV radiation, which can cause long-term pigmentation, darkening, or redness. Using SPF-containing scar products helps prevent this and improves long-term cosmetic outcomes.

10. Are silicone sheets reusable?
Yes. Most high-quality silicone sheets (like Scarban) are reusable for 4–8 weeks with proper cleaning using the included soap. The Scarban Light sheets are reusable for approximately 2-4 weeks.
You can cut each sheet to fit the shape of the scar. It is recommended the each cut extendeds 1.5-2cm beyond all edges of the scar. For example if you had a 3cm scar and purchased a 15x20cm Elastic Sheet, you can cut this sheet into four quarters (each cut approx 5x3cm long) the use each of these as individual sheets (getting approx. 4--8weeks usage out of each cut).
11. Which silicone sheet should I choose—Scarban Light or Elastic?
-
Scarban Elastic: More intensive, thicker silicone layer, best for abnormal scars. Lasts approx 4-8 weeks per cut.
-
Scarban Light: More flexible, ideal for mobile body areas or sensitive skin.
Lasts approx 2-4 weeks per cut.
12. Can I cut silicone sheets to size?
Yes. All Scarban sheets can be trimmed to fit your scar size and shape.
13. Is silicone therapy safe for children or sensitive skin?
Yes. Medical-grade silicone is hypoallergenic and safe for children, facial areas, and sensitive skin. However there is a small population with silicone intolerance. If you think this may be you, we recommend speaking with your health specialist before using, and then patch testing a sheet to check for intolerance.
14. Can I combine silicone therapy with moisturisers or other scar products?
Yes. Use moisturisers like ALHYDRAN prior (approx 1-2 hours) to applying silicone or at a different time of day (e.g. morning for cream, evening for silicone) to maintain silicone’s effect.
15. Will silicone therapy work on old scars?
Silicone therapy is most effective when used within the first 18–24 months of scar formation, while the tissue is still actively remodeling. However, it can still be beneficial for older scars, helping reduce itchiness, discomfort, tightness, and improving texture and colour over time.
