The formulation pairs two actions. Silver sulfadiazine provides broad spectrum antibacterial cover, binding to the cell walls or DNA of gram positive and gram negative organisms. On contact with tissue it reacts with sodium chloride and proteins, releasing sulfadiazine into the wound. Hyaluronic acid supports the diffusion of water soluble molecules and cell migration, helping maintain the conditions in which repair takes place.

Silver sulfadiazine is effective against a wide range of organisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pyogenes, two of the most commonly encountered in wounds and infected burns, as well as many species of fungi.
