PneumaSox: A Fast, Easy, and Sustainable Solution for Compression Therapy

At the EWMA 2024 conference in London, a novel innovation in compression therapy was unveiled — the PneumaSox Adaptable Pneumatic Compression Device (APCD). Designed to streamline care for patients with chronic venous disease (CVD) and venous leg ulcers, this breakthrough device has the potential to transform outpatient and home-based compression therapy.

A Promising Alternative to Traditional Bandages

The PneumaSox APCD offers a major advantage over traditional two-layer compression bandages: speed and simplicity.

In a recent proof-of-principle study, 42 experienced homecare nurses were asked to apply both the APCD and their preferred two-layer compression bandages — each on two occasions. The results were striking:

  • Average application time for traditional bandages: 154 seconds

  • Average application time for PneumaSox: 53 seconds

This means PneumaSox can be applied nearly three times faster, saving valuable time for already overburdened healthcare workers. Even more impressively, the APCD’s user-friendly design means no special strength or skill is required. Patients and caregivers can easily operate and re-apply the device themselves — a significant step forward in enabling self-care and reducing reliance on clinic visits.

Smart Design, Clinician-Set Compression

The device features a single air chamber that wraps comfortably around the lower leg. Compression levels can be pre-set by clinicians between 10 and 100 mmHg, in 10 mmHg increments. If pressure declines over time, the patient can easily restore it to the prescribed level using a manual air pump — no clinical assistance needed.

The even distribution of pressure across the lower leg also supports better comfort and tolerability, even in sensitive areas like the malleolus.

Environmental and Economic Advantages

Beyond its clinical benefits, PneumaSox stands out as an environmentally conscious and cost-effective alternative:

  • Reusable for up to six months, compared to single-use bandages

  • Machine washable, reducing medical waste

  • Fewer dressing changes and less staff time required, contributing to long-term cost savings

In a healthcare landscape facing increased demand and workforce shortages, PneumaSox offers a meaningful solution that supports both clinical outcomes and healthcare system sustainability.

Conclusion: A Safe, Smart, and Scalable Solution

The initial findings from this study suggest that PneumaSox is a safe, effective, and patient-friendly alternative to traditional compression bandaging. While further research is needed to evaluate long-term use during daily activity, the early indicators are strong: faster application, ease of use, reduced waste, and greater independence for patients.
